Soils, Live Roof™ & Container Media

At Great Lakes Nursery Soils, we take great pride in the quality of our soils.

Our container mix is appropriate for quart size perennials and up to 25 gallon trees. All of our container mixes are carefully blended to meet your growing needs. We will work side by side with you to create a soil that has a consistent p.H., porosity, and moisture holding capacity to ensure you a quality final product.

Additional Soil Information

Standard Container Mix – This mix is a combination of rice hulls, pine bark, peat moss and saw dust. Our mix has a consistent texture and p.H. of 6.0-6.5.

Live Roof™ – This soil is predominately composed of high quality inorganic aggregates, contains a special clay particle to bind nutrients, contains acid rain buffering components, and is formulated with disease suppressive organic material at a level that is consistent with ecologically sustainable soil/plant communities.

Mushroom Compost - Mushroom compost is suitable for most garden plants. This compost supports various types of plant growth such as fruits and vegetables to herbs and flowers. Mushroom compost is a great soil amendment for any soil that needs a nutrient boost. There are several uses for mushroom compost. Our mushroom compost can be used as soil amendment for lawns, gardens, and container plants. Mushroom compost contains acceptable to optimum levels of Nitrogen, Calcium, Magnesium, Manganese, Zinc, Sodium & Sulfur.

Leaf Compost - Leaf compost will improve the quality of almost any soil, and for this reason it is most often considered a soil conditioner. Leaf compost improves the structure and texture of an existing soil. Our leaf compost allows the soil to better retain nutrients, moisture, and air space for healthier plants. This compost also adds nutrients to your soil. Leaf compost contains a variety of the basic nutrients that plants require for healthy growth. In addition to the main three; nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium. Other benefits, include the micronutrients found in compost such as manganese, copper, iron, and zinc.

Mushroom/Leaf Compost - Blended Mushroom/Leaf compost is the best of both worlds. Combining equal parts of mushroom compost and leaf compost, mushroom/leaf compost provides a struggling soil with what it needs to perform well. By combining the nutrients from mushroom compost and the many benefits of leaf compost, our blended mushroom/leaf compost is a perfect soil amendment for a nutrient depleted soil. Our compost contains optimum/acceptable levels of phosphorus, calcium, Magnesium, Manganese, Zinc, & Sodium.

Stable p.H. | Texture Consistency

You can rest assure that our soil will be delivered to you with a stable p.H. as well as texture consistency. There are several benefits to the composting and the maintaining of consistent texture and p.H.

  • Composted – Our soil is composted for disease and insect suppression and the elimination of weed seed. The composting process also allows the growth of beneficial organisms, which can reduce Phythium, Fusarium, and Rhizoctonia.
  • Stable p.H. The p.H. will be stable between 5.5 and 6.5, depending on the custom mix you choose.
  • Consistency – The mix you choose is carefully blended to maintain consistent percentages of raw materials. This allows us to produce a soil that is consistent in texture and p.H. from the beginning, to the end of the growing season.
